Janie Browning of Gadsden City schools was presented with the prestigious Charles Mott Award at the Alabama Community Education Association (ACEA) conference in Mobile, Alabama. This award, the highest honor bestowed by ACEA, commemorates Charles Stewart Mott, who initiated community education in Flint, Michigan during the 1930s. Mott, known for his philanthropic efforts and commitment to education, established the C.S. Mott Foundation in 1926 to improve education and healthcare in Flint. The Mott Foundation continues to be a leading force in promoting democratic ideals, including community education, grassroots citizen participation, and global environmental awareness. Mott’s legacy, encapsulated in his statement “Let us be known by our deeds,” extends far beyond his role in founding General Motors Corporation.
